This hugely enjoyable steam train journey, of just under 100 miles return, takes the strain away from the car driver and allows the whole family to sit back and view beautiful Cardigan Bay, on one side, and the mountains of Snowdonia, on the other. "The Cambrian", operated by West Coast Railway, runs between the small Welsh market town of Machynlleth and the former slate shipping village, Porthmadog every day, Monday to Friday and on to Pwllheli on a Wednesday and Friday only. It is a day out for all the family to discover the beautiful Cambrian Coast. |

| The train leaves from Machynlleth, once briefly the capital of Wales, and the site of Owain Glyndwr’s Welsh Parliament in 1404. Ample parking spaces are available in the town centre, which is only a five minute walk from the station. |  |
| From Machynlleth the train travels to Tywyn and Barmouth an old harbour town with the wonderful wooden railway bridge built in 1866, with its 113 trestles, crossing the estuary. From Barmouth the train travels along some of the most wonderful coastline in this beautiful part of Wales. |  |
| The train stops at the World Heritage site of Harlech with its magnificent castle, built by Edward I, offering stunning views from the 200 ft. high crag over Cardigan Bay, the Lleyn Peninsula and the mountains of Snowdonia. |  |
| The next stop on the line is Minffordd. Here there is an interchange with the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog. It is also the closest station to the colourful, dream like village of Portmeirion. |  |
Porthmadog. The station lies beside the recently extended Welsh Highland Railway which has wonderful views toward the Glaslyn Valley. There is plenty to do in the town. From the Ffestiniog Railway, Maritime Museum and for the energetic some fine walks along the Black Rock Sands. With just under three hours in Porthmadog before the return journey there is plenty of time for the family to savour this historic town. |

Pwllheli - New for 2008 The Cambrian will travel to this beautiful coastal town on a Wednesday when the local market is on and on a Friday. While there you have one and three quarter hours to discover this the main town on the Llyn Peninsula. |
